Meet the “G” Behind Big G: Ground, Gravel, and Grading:

There’s an old saying that if you want a job done right, you have to do it yourself. But if you’ve ever stared at a pile of gravel or an uneven backyard and realized you need more than a shovel, you need someone you can trust to treat your land like their own. My name is Garrett van Halderen, and I’m the owner-operator of Big G.

From Tonka Toys to the Real Deal:

My obsession with dirt work didn’t start with a business plan; it started in a dirt patch with Tonka toys. I grew up watching my dad work his 1970s John Deere 310B, and eventually, I found myself renting machines to handle the landscaping at my own rental properties. I realized two things during those projects: I truly love this work. The Inland Northwest needs more operators who are honest, detailed, and most importantly actually show up on time.

What’s in a Name?

People often ask where “Big G” comes from. It’s actually a lifelong nickname from my dad. Being the older brother, I was “Big G” and my brother Grant was “Little G.” Even though we’re the same size now, the name stuck. Family is everything to me, so it felt right to bring that history into my business. (Plus, as an average-height guy, I appreciate the irony!)

The Owner-Operator Advantage:

When you hire Big G, you aren’t getting a rotating crew of employees. You’re getting me. The person who bids your job is the person doing the work. No “lost in translation” moments between a salesman and a crew. If we hit a surprise underground or a project needs a pivot, I don’t have to “call the boss.” I am the boss. We talk, we find a solution, and we keep moving.

My background is in IT and property management, two worlds where communication and timeliness are everything. I know how frustrating it is when a contractor disappears. I pride myself on being there when I say I will be.
